Shooting the Yukon Quest 2011: Gear List and Lessons Learned

The 2012 Yukon Quest is fast approaching, and I often get asked what gear people should bring along to take photos of the Quest.

I don’t expect people to run out and buy the latest, greatest camera or lens, since photographers have gotten great shots of the Quest no matter what gear they use. Bring what you have!

Generally, most of the excitement and amazing images of the Yukon Quest come from the sweeping vistas and mountains while the race is on.

However, as a photographer rushing from checkpoint to checkpoint, you spend a lot of time inside those checkpoints, trying to make things look interesting. The Circle City checkpoint was pretty busy – firetrucks, gear, coats hanging up, picnic tables around, media and volunteers all about.

That in itself can make interesting pictures.

But to take things a little beyond the ordinary, you can use little tricks to do something different.  Continue reading
