Shooting the Yukon Quest 2011: Gear List and Lessons Learned

The 2012 Yukon Quest is fast approaching, and I often get asked what gear people should bring along to take photos of the Quest.

I don’t expect people to run out and buy the latest, greatest camera or lens, since photographers have gotten great shots of the Quest no matter what gear they use. Bring what you have!

However, I’ve learned that there are certain pieces of equipment that are going to help you out immensely. Continue reading

I decided to head out and brush up on my hockey-shooting skills.

The Whitehorse Oldtimer Hockey League offers some great action for sports photos, and the lighting in the Takhini Arena is, surprisingly, not too bad. Well, not too bad as far as non-NHL rinks go!

I also got the chance to try out my 400mm f/5.6 lens as an indoor sports lens. It’s amazing! Mind you, it required me to shoot at ISO 12,800 to get proper exposures, but I’m very impressed at the quality of the photos at such extreme ISO speeds.  Continue reading

Generally, most of the excitement and amazing images of the Yukon Quest come from the sweeping vistas and mountains while the race is on.

However, as a photographer rushing from checkpoint to checkpoint, you spend a lot of time inside those checkpoints, trying to make things look interesting. The Circle City checkpoint was pretty busy – firetrucks, gear, coats hanging up, picnic tables around, media and volunteers all about.

That in itself can make interesting pictures.

But to take things a little beyond the ordinary, you can use little tricks to do something different.  Continue reading

A rider hits the trails around Long Lake in Whitehorse, Yukon.
